Fiestas and traditions.
Barcelona provides visitors with a variety of traditional fiestas in which citizens express their greatest enthusiasm on these days of community culture throughout the city’s streets and squares. The year begins with the magic of the Three Magi (Wise Men). In February comes the Carnival. In April, there is the traditional festival of Sant Jordi, and in June, the night of San Juan to celebrate the arrival of summer. In August, the fiesta mayor (main patron saint fiesta) of the Gràcia neighbourhood takes place, whereas in September it is time for the fiesta mayor de la Mercè (Barcelona’s main patron saint fiesta). And to finish the year and celebrate the winter solstice, the Santa Llúcia fair is held.
Music
Thanks to the wide variety of music events to choose from, Barcelona has become an example for European cities to follow. All musical styles find a place in the city.
To enjoy the great classics of symphonic music and performances by singer-songwriters, one should go to the Palau de la Música Catalana and the Auditorium. However, if you prefer the opera, the Gran Teatre Liceu is the place to go.
In the Eixample and Ciutat Vella areas, there are numerous venues where you can enjoy jazz, pop and rock. Barcelona also has an established scene for hip-hop and new generation electronic music lovers. It also has a wide range of musical festivals throughout the year, like Primavera Sound, Sonar, the El Grec Festival, Summer Case and others.
Cinema and Theatre
Barcelona provides very interesting cinema and theatre listings. The most important theatres in the city are the Gran Liceu, specializing in opera, the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, which puts on the great classics, and Teatro Libre with more avant-garde entertainment. If you’re looking for more experimental theatre, try the Teatro Condal, Teatro Poliorama, Teatro Romea or the Teatro Victoria. You can also find cinemas for all tastes, showing everything from mainstream films to arthouse cinema and B movies. The Generalitat’s Film Archive cinema (Filmoteca de la Generalitat) and Cine Verdi are a must.
