Culture in Barcelona

Festivals and traditions.

Barcelona offers its visitors a large variety of traditional festivals in which the locals show huge enthusiasm during these days of community culture spread throughout the city’s streets and squares.

The year begins with the magic of the Three Kings; in February, it’s Carnival time; in April, the traditional festival of Sant Jordi (St George’s Day); in June, the night of Sant Joan which celebrates the arrival of summer; in August, the Gràcia street festival; in September, the city festival of La Mercè and, to end the year and celebrate the winter solstice, the fair of Santa Llúcia.

Music

Thanks to the large variety of music on offer, Barcelona has become a city of European reference for it. All music genres have their place in the city.

To enjoy the main classics of symphonic music and the shows by the most prestigious musicians, you have to go to Palau de la Música Catalana and the Auditori. However, if you prefer opera, then you need to go to the Gran Teatre del Liceu.

In the districts of Eixample and Ciutat Vella (Old Town), there are many venues where you can enjoy jazz, pop and rock concerts.

Barcelona also has a big scene for new generation hip-hop and electronic music lovers. Also, it has a wide offer of music festivals throughout the year, such as Primavera Sound, Sónar, Festival Grec, East Ender…

Film and Theatre

Barcelona offers a very interesting film and theatre programme. The most important theatres in the city are the Gran Teatre del Liceu, specialised in opera; Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, with representations of the great classics; and the Teatre Lliure, with the most avant-garde performances. If you fancy a more experimental theatre, Teatre Condal, Teatre Poliorama, Teatre Romea or Teatre Victoria are excellent choices.

You can also find cinemas for all tastes, which screen from the most commercial films to independent films and B-movies. The Filmoteca de la Generalitat and Cine Verdi are places you must visit.
